Single-Use Plastics Ordinance

In a step toward a greener future, the Whitpain Township Board of Supervisors passed a “Single-Use Plastics Ordinance” on October 15, 2024. The ordinance, which can be read in full here, eliminates the use of most single use plastic bags in Township retail establishments and eliminates the use of expanded polystyrene cups and containers frequently used for take-out food orders. Along with these restrictions, single-use plastic utensils will be made available upon request at retail establishments.

To better prepare businesses and residents for these changes, the ordinance will not become enforceable until November 1, 2025. However, retail establishments are asked to post the Township’s “Official Notice” flyers at points of sale beginning on April 30, 2025.  The flyers are available for download and printing below.

If you own or operate a business and have special circumstances, a large inventory of single use plastic bags, or other unique challenges, you can apply for a temporary waiver from this ordinance here.
